Why is food an important factor to know when understanding or learning about Gaza?
-The Gaza Strip is always closely surrounded by negative comments and sad stories. Although those stories are touching and need to be told, there are other things that can be focused on, shedding some positive light on Gaza. And that is FOOD! I've always been told that food can make a person happy and in Gaza there is plenty of great food dishes that looks delicious and probably tastes even more great. Sometimes when you focus on all the negative things about a situation you forget about all the good things that are surrounding you. Making the best out of bad circumstances can bring you joy just knowing that God has created such a wide variety of wonderful edible foods. There are lovely beaches, restaurants, foods, food trees, and land that give Gaza a more positive feel to it. Although Gaza is surrounded by killings, destruction of homes, bombings and illegal arrests, it is still a place of residency for alot of Palestinians.
The most powerful images?
-The most powerful images i believe are the finished dishes of foods that are made by people in Gaza who have little to no cooking tools but still manages to fix appetizing foods. Pics of children food shopping for their family is also powerful because they are given the responsiblity to make sure their family eats which can be very hard. The pics of rumble and demolished houses is also very powerful because of the effect that is causes for those people who are left homeless because of their home being destroyed. You see the everyday struggles that Palestinians have to endure, whether its being stopped for no reason at checkpoints, not being able to recieve proper healthcare for themselves or injured children, not given educational opportunities or arrested because of being a suspected terrorist in their own country.
What have I learned?
-Constructing this site has have me such a more in-dept look and knowledge on the foods that are traditional in Gaza. Just like in the American culture fried chicken is a popular fixed food amongst most families because it has been around for years. Learning about the traditional foods that Palestinians fix and pass down from generation to generation. I have learned that Gaza is a place surrounded by unfortunate events taking place everyday that Gazans cannot controll. But though these events make Gaza into the war zone it is, there are still some constructive things that occur in the city. Rappers/Music, Food, Sports, Clothing, and Art are some of the positive things that you can see and learn about other then the negative issues. After learning about Gaza and knowing that there are innocent peole living like prisoners in their own country, you come to appreciate your life and the blessings that have come your way. Because while your complaing about minor things in life such as not recieving a certain pair of shoes for christmas for example, there are people in the world who don't even own a pair of shoes. Be grateful for what you have no matter how small or big.
